First of all what is fear? Fear is a strong emotion - it is only natural that everyone feels some form of fear, nervousness or anxiety sometime during their lives. If this emotion did not exist we humans would do some very silly and dangerous things. The emotion of fear is an in-built response which keeps us safe from harm. There are times, however, when it can get out of control - the feelings and emotions associated with fear can become hugely exaggerated leading to panic attacks and phobias, this is when it feels like it is overtaking your life.
How does it develop? There is usually an event or a stumulus that first plants that seed of fear within the subconscious. Contrary to what you may think, it may not be a particularly noticiable or catastrophic event, but what happened has just enough impact upon the subconscious mind to cause problems in later life. As it is generally not a very nice feeliing, the subconsciuos processess all the information from the feeling and makes a note that it is very harmful or frightening to be placed in a certain situaltion or to be faced by a certain stimulus - so next time you are faced with a trigger that reminds the subconscious of this fearful memory, it immediately throws up a red flag - then the panic starts to kick in and the uncomfortable feelings arise. As time goes on the fear can become more and more exagerated.
Very basically, even though it is doing it in a very negative way, the subconscious is doing it's very best to protect you, to keep you safe from this harmful situation or stimulus.
